Gel pack rule: 1 lb of gel pack per 1โ2 lbs of frozen meat is a standard starting point. A 15 lb meat box typically requires 10โ15 lbs of gel packs (5โ7 ร 32 oz packs). Heavier gel pack loads improve safety margin for 2-day zones but increase cost and shipping weight.
Transit day consideration: For 1-day zones, you may be able to use fewer packs. For 3-day zones, increase pack weight or switch to dry ice. Always test with your specific product, box geometry, and season before committing to a configuration.
Dry ice comparison: Dry ice runs $12โ18/box for typical 10 lb loads at small-volume retail (โ$1.25โ1.50/lb). Dry ice requires SOP safety labeling under DOT regulations.
